An Encounter With the Bolshoi Ballet

I as many who have read my articles may gather am a tremendous opera fan though in all sincerity I can not claim to be an equal devotee of the ballet, however this should not be interpreted that I do not take joy from it. Perhaps it is because my tastes lean more to the passion of the singers and the drama in the opera rather then the grace of the ballet dancer. What ever the reason I must claim to be a bigger opera fan then ballet fan but in all truth I am a lover of the ballet however I did not become one till I in Santiago, Chile met the members of the Bolshoi ballet. This was a time I will never forget as it made me see all the grace of the ballet however before this encounter with the Bolshoi I had seen them perform in Moscow and perhaps it is there that I was introduced to the ballet. My decision to visit the Soviet Union came during the fall of 1988. It was the time of perestroika, glasnosts and Michael Gorbachov, the new leader of the Soviet Union who many Americans had taken a liking to as they could see a certain honesty in him. I for my part can not claim that my desires to visit the Soviet Union were influenced in any way by Gorbachov as the real reason for my trip was based on my wanting to travel the world, in search of all those cities and places I had read about in my extensive readings of history. Of course this was also at a time in my life when I was entertaining dreams of becoming a professional photographer and had it in mind to take photographs of Leningrad (previously called Petrograd, presently Saint Petersburg) and Moscow. These cities seemed ideal for this purpose, both having architecture that was so diverse from New York and the feeling of history would be enormous. After all these were two cities that had been almost in the center of World War II and the Russian revolutions of 1917. The first of which overthrew Nicholas II while the second in October (though the Russian Orthodox calendar marks this day as having been in November) put the Bolsheviks in power. I had even wanted to visit the Soviet Union before but the matter had not been so simple as I would have wanted it. First off all because the Soviet Union was a closed society I needed a visa; not that this was an inconvenience as I had already visited many other communist countries such as Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the DDR, and Yugoslavia. These countries also requiring me as an American to have a visa. I can even add how there was a time in 1987 in which I as an American was required to have a visa in to order to enter France as opposed to being given one automatically upon entrance as was the case with most European countries. The Soviet Union however was different, even from other communist countries which only required me to go to their embassy or consulate, naturally with my passport, two photographs and the money to pay for the visa. The Soviet Union not only required me to have the already mentioned but a prepaid hotel where I would be staying, which basically meant that I would either have to reserve a hotel in the cities I wanted to go to before departing New York or go on what is commonly referred to as a “guided tour”. I not so much by my own choice took the second option of going on the guided tour even if in all truth I would have preferred to go alone. It was with the intension of spending Christmas and New Year’s day in the Soviet Union that I in early November booked myself on a tour that would include Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad, in that order. It was while visiting these cities in the Soviet Union that I observed many things, some of which were even strange or at least in my opinion for a communist country (me having already visited several) for instance, in the Soviet Union there were stores which only accepted hard currency (this meaning any currency which could be converted outside its country of origin) and were off limits to Soviet citizens. Yes, passports were checked upon entrance in to the stores. It was not that stores like this did not exist in Poland or other communist countries I had visited but contrary to the Soviet Union in those countries anybody could buy what they wished so long as they had the right kind of currency, in the Soviet Union it was a case of Soviets not even being allowed to enter the stores, let alone make purchases of any kind. Naturally just as there were stores in which only foreigners such as myself could enter, there were also stores in which foreigners were banned from as only Soviets could enter and again passports or documents were checked. I even recall how on one occasion, somebody I met asked me to buy him something in the store for foreigners only. The Soviet Union also had other factors which made it different from any of the Communist countries I had already visited for instance again only guests of hotels were allowed to enter as a control was set up at the entrance where one was obliged to show one’s card from the hotel. This however did not present so much of a problem for me nor for many Soviets (I refer to them as such as I can not in all honesty claim to have known who was Russian or from one of the many republics that made up the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) who managed to get in to the hotel in spite of not being a guest of the hotel. Where the card required to enter the hotel was not a problem the fact that I was required to pay everything in hard currency was however more then slightly annoying as this made prices higher then they would have been had I been allowed to buy drinks or other such niceties in Rubbles, which I could get a lot more of on the black market. This however was not to be as hotels wanted hard currency not only for the cost of the room but even for what one purchased in them, this being in contrast to Polish hotels were one was only required to pay for the room in hard currency. It was in Moscow that I stayed in a hotel called “Cosmos” which I might add was the most exclusive at the time, though in all truth its standards were lower then those which I had known in the west. I arrived at the hotel on the 24th of December and on my second day of being in Moscow after having spent the first two sightseeing; I had what could be called my first experience in the Soviet Union. Two young men who must have been about my age at time (me being 21) knocked on the hotel room which I was sharing with one of the members of my tour group. It was in the company of another member of my tour that these two young men came asking if my roommate and I cared to barter trade. At first neither my roommate nor I knew what these two men had in mind and being in a country we knew not to be democracy; my American roommate, whose name completely escapes me and I were slightly apprehensive. It was one of these two young men who asked us if we had any blue jeans or anything we cared to trade such as American cigarettes or basically anything. I for my part felt I had nothing that would be worth their while as all I had was my cameras (which I was not ready to trade for anything), a couple of packs of cigarettes (me being a smoker at the time), the clothes I had brought with me (which included a pair of grey blue jeans that frankly speaking I was even slightly ashamed to even show given the condition they were in) and my cassettes which included some pop music. It did not take long with these two men and all those from my tour group who had come over to pick up a bargain; for the room I was sharing with a history teacher from Phoenix to become an national or international black market. Blue jeans were being exchanged for Russian fur hats, caviar (this being a French word as the Russian word is “ikra”) and other Russian goodies. It was inspired by the way these two Russians or so I think they were apparently willing to take just about any and everything we had that I decided to show them the old grey jeans I had bought over a year ago in London. Much to my near shock they accepted to take them for a black fur hat though given they were old they did ask me to throw in something extra which I did in the form of a pack of Marlboro which they accepted but however my having guilty feelings over the old jeans compelled me to add a tape by the British band known as “Led Zeppelin”. During these transactions; I noticed how people from two different countries and ways of life could trade and do business and though the English spoken by these two gentlemen was not exactly perfect it was understandable, making me think how even in a communist system it was always possible to find entrepreneurs. I even

How to make your own perfumes and fragrances

Shopping for perfume can be an especially difficult process for some women. Since every woman’s exact body chemistry composition is slightly different, the same fragrance will smell different on two different women. The frustration can be great for many women and some even give up wearing any fragrance at all because of the difficulties. Making your own perfume and fragrances at home can solve the problem and will be well worth the minimum effort required to produce top quality, personalized results.

There are various ways of making a perfume and each method lends itself to a different type of fragrance. Using an oil base will allow the scent to linger on the skin longer as the natural body heat warms the oil, while using an alcohol base will allow the scent to be sprayed but will not linger as long without added liquid glycerin.

To make an oil based perfume, begin with a ratio of 2:1 grape seed or high quality olive oil to flowers. Native plants are most recommended as they are the most easily attained. Plants such as lavender, Kangaroo Paw, and the Southern Spring Flower are some of the best flowers to use as they produce a top quality and distinctive fragrance that is unique to Australia. Gently bruise the flowers you have chosen and place them at the bottom of a medium sized glass bowl. Pour the oil over the top of the flowers and allow the mixture to sit covered loosely with cheese cloth for at least twenty-four hours. At the end of twenty-four hours, strain the mixture through the cheesecloth and repeat the whole process again.

]]>

You now have an essential oil of whatever flower mixture you used. This can be used in two different ways for perfume making and will yield beautiful results, no matter the application.

In order to make an oil based perfume you can either use the essential oil mixture very sparingly as is or use a mix of 3:1 oil to vodka to help thin the oil out to make applying the oil to the skin a bit easier. If you are wanting to create a scent that you can spray onto your skin or clothing, measure one third of a pint of vodka into the bottom of a small bowl and add drops of the essential oil mixture, one at a time, to the vodka, mixing thoroughly, until about eight drops are added. Let this mixture stand covered for about two days and then add one cup spring water to the vodka and oil mixture. Pour this mixture directly into your tube or sprayer and enjoy.

All containers that hold either left over essential oils that were not used in the natural fragrances making process or the resulting perfumes should be dark in colour to deter light. Storage in a cool, dark place is also recommended to keep your fragrance quality from degrading due to direct sunlight exposure.

Jehovahs Witness

The life of a Jehovah Witnesses and the experiences of the Kingdom Hall

Over the next years leading in to my first set of real school examinations, my sense of isolation grew and grew. I had just one friend. The sole members of the opposite sex I saw were Jehovah Witness girls, and I knew that Witnesses could not be trusted.

I was in a dark place and frequently cried myself to sleep as I could see no escape route. I couldn’t leave as my father, at this time an elder – and as zealous as ever would throw me out of the house. How would I support myself? Would I sleep on the streets? I had no money, no supportive relatives, and no one with whom I could talk. I was alone.

I realised that it was important to get the best education possible so I was a hard worker for my junior exams – and achieved one of the finest grades in the year. I achieved nine honours, 1 ‘A’ and eight ‘B’ grades for people who may know the Irish system. This was the first time I had been really ecstatic in months, I wanted to celebrate ; I would have liked to go with my mates to an alcohol free disco. This was banned, but much worse, no alternative was offered, no family dinner, no congratulations party – merely a nod and a well done child.

My one Jehovah Witness chum, who was maybe 14 at this point, was due to remain over in our house that weekend. After my elders mostly ignoring my scholastic success, I decided that I would like to try vodka – so I purchased a half bottle and that night I got drunk for the first time with my only ‘friend’.

As the weeks wore on I became more disillusioned, I was hurting inside and it felt like a punch in the gut forever. I prayed to Jehovah at night with tears dripping down my face, quietly crying so as not to draw attention – there was no one who could understand, no one who could help. Jehovah was silent. Eventually I grew morbidly inquisitive about methods of suicide ; tablets could take up to forty eight hours, no guns in ireland, maybe monoxide poisoning? I was searching for the most efficient way to kill myself.

I ultimately settled on slitting my wrist. So with a fresh bottle of vodka and three Stanley knife blades, I wrote my goodbye letter – it was the fault of the elders and the religion, I wrote, they had driven me to this point and this was the only way out. When my elders were asleep I started into the vodka, then with the bottle finished I made the first cut – but it wasn’t deep enough, nor were the following ones. Eventually I cut and cut and cut again into the same opening making it bigger and bigger. It hurt like hell even thru the alcohol – I squeezed my arm, begging for the vein to open. Tears drenched my face and I considered the nothingness that I could escape to – freedom from the daily pain. I couldn’t cut deep enough and I was cutting vertically not down the vein as I later discovered was the ‘correct’ system. In frustration I cut more and more lines into my wrist – at about that point my arm was extraordinarily bloody and sticky red but still no vein was found. Blood flowed as from any large cut, but not fast enough.

Angry and in lot of agony, I made up my mind to make one more cut, and sleep in the vain hope the blood which flowed from my arm would be adequate to not wake up again.

the following morning I woke with a thumping headache, a bloody letter, sheets covered in red, but still much alive. I hurriedly removed the vodka bottle, the note, and cleaned my arm up. I’ve always had nose bleeds which at times were quite severe so I blamed the sheets on this.

the next days were a blur and a half fact, I was supposed to have died, and I detested myself for not having the guts to do the job properly.

it all changed the next weekend. The family went for a stroll in the forest and I found myself alone amongst the trees in the special silence that only nature can provide. Like a flash, I realized that everything was joined together, the smell of pine needles and wood sap, the birds singing, the sun filtering through the leaves, the warmth on my skin – it all condensed and I felt for the 1st time like I belonged to the Earth.

It was at that point that I realised irrespective of what my current position in life, I may be responsible for my future – I determined how my life would map out, not my parents, not their faith, nor any other person……

Jazz Up Your Office Christmas Party With Scrumptious Cocktails

No party is complete without Christmas food and Christmas beverages. Christmas beverages are a fantastic way of adding that festive touch to your office Christmas party. They do not necessarily have to be hard, or even expensive, as there are plenty of easy to make and inexpensive cocktail recipes.

Cocktails are bound to get everyone into the festive mood. There not only classy, are bound to get you guests a bit tipsy, but are very tasty indeed. One of the easiest recipes is the infamous Ginger Snaps – a mixture of Advocaat liquor and ginger ale – which can be topped off with a cherry. Spicy, fragrant and delicious, this cocktail is a favourite at Christmas, especially with a sweet dessert.

If you feel truly festive, try the snowball, a sweet drink that packs a punch! For this drink, it’s worth investing in a few margarita glasses, or you can even make this a long drink by replacing the cognac with Vodka. To create a snowball, you need to add a dash of cognac or vodka, with Advocaat and the juice of one lime – then simply shake it up in a cocktail shaker. Lastly add chilled lemonade and decorate with cherries.

There’s bound to be at least a few cosmopolitan lovers in the crowd. This legendary drink was made popular by the cosmopolitan girls from Sex and the City. Combine the vodka (lemon vodka is generally used), Cointreau or Triple Sec, cranberry juice and juice from a lime or lime cordial. You can either stir it or put it in a cocktail shaker to mix the ingredients. Next, decorate a martini glass with sugar and a wedge of lime – then most importantly serve the cosmopolitan to your guests.

If your staff are not all cocktail lovers provide a few classical Christmas beverages to keep everyone happy, including Christmas punch, mulled wine, and eggnog and Christmas spirits.  For those who do not drink, there are a number of alcohol free cocktails and drinks that are still festive.

What Are My Kosher Liquor Options?

It’s a common misconception that keeping kosher severely limits your choices in alcohol. In fact, kosher wines and spirits are available in a greater variety than ever before.

Let’s take a look at some of your options for kosher liquor and wine:

Mevushal and Non-Mevushal Kosher Wines

Under Orthodox law, a wine is only considered kosher if it has only been manufactured by Sabbath-observant Jews (excluding the growing and harvesting process). This applies not only to the production and bottling of wine, but the handling as well; if a bottle of wine is poured by a non-observant waiter, for example, it is no longer kosher. Thus, it’s easy to run into difficulty at Jewish weddings and other events staffed by non-observant servers but requiring kosher wines. Mevushal wine is the exception to this rule. It is heated during production and after this point will not lose its kosher status if handled by a non-observant person.

Once upon a time, critics turned up their noses at mevushal kosher wines, which were traditionally boiled, a process that destroys a large amount of tannins and flavors in the wine. Modern mevushal kosher wines, however, are heated through a process called flash pasteurization, which is both faster than boiling and requires lower temperatures, thus preserving almost all of the original flavors. Since flash pasteurization was developed, mevushal kosher wines have come a long way toward matching the quality of non-mevushal products. Among other brands, Herzog wine produces a wide variety of mevushal kosher wines.

If you are preparing for an Orthodox event, mevushal wine is always a safe bet. For home use, however, it’s best to experiment with mevushal and non-mevushal kosher wines and find the specific varietals and regions you enjoy. Try a discount liquor store for affordable options of both preparations.

Kosher Bourbon, Vodka, and Single Malt Scotch Whiskey

Some of the best single malt scotch and small batch bourbon is actually kosher liquor. Single malt scotch whiskey is kosher in its own right, however it loses its kosher status when aged in casks once used for sherry. Thus, it’s important to check the label for mentions sherry or dual/double finishes.

Many kosher liquor stores feature large collections of single malt scotch whiskey, including discount liquors and more rare vintages. The subtleties of flavors available are amazing, meaning no two batches are alike.

American whiskeys of all kinds are classified as kosher, as they are aged exclusively in oak barrels. This includes bourbon, rye, Tennessee, and Kentucky whiskeys. This makes small batch bourbon safe for kosher liquor gift sets, which can also be packed with kosher wines and snacks.

Ideal for mixed drinks or to be consumed plain, vodka is another potentially kosher liquor. In general, domestic, non-flavored vodka made from grain or potatoes is kosher. Imported and flavored bottles are trickier, and it’s always best to check for a certification label. However, certain imported, non-flavored vodka brands are always considered kosher, including Absolut, Belvidere, Grey Goose, Kettle One, and Stolichnaya.

Sonata Arctica au Transbordeur à Lyon le 14 novembre 2007
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Band: Vodka Juniors Song: KAG Album: All Them Clowns Genre: Crossover Thrash/Punk/Hardcore Lyrics: So we have a running disorder, trapped by questionable morality, followed by homophobes and human rights abuse politics. Their strikes plague our freedom. I say it is English slavery, some say that it’s not, assholes with red white skin. Bombarding the people who live by the day, licking the asses of the American state. Open your eyes, deep breath, no more lies, takes less than a year, just anger no fear. Why don’t you try something better? You can choose your way of life but you don’t intercept us, there is one thing we all live for, integrity and freedom. Why does it always take a fucking lifetime? We have to raise our voice to get what we deserve. Same shit different day… Why don’t you move on?
